Participants chart new course in event’s third year
More than 1,000 participants made the third annual Bellin Women’s Half Marathon a success on Saturday, Oct. 7, celebrating sisterhood through the only event of its kind in Northeast Wisconsin.
Seven hundred sixteen participants registered for the 13.1 mile event as individuals, while another 338 were part of two-person relay teams. The youngest registrant was 10; the oldest, 74. The event also welcomed eight teams from myTEAM TRIUMPH, the organization that pairs challenged athletes with able-bodied individuals for an inclusive race experience.
Complete race results will be available the afternoon of race day at www.bellinwomenshalf.com.
Conditions were overcast and humid when the race began at KI Convention Center in downtown Green Bay. Temperatures were in the mid 60s.
Dubbed “a race to empower women,” the Bellin Women’s Half Marathon was created in 2015 to
celebrate and motivate female athletes of all levels and abilities. The focus also provides an opportunity to spotlight training and health issues specifically related to women, such as the unique challenges facing runners who are mothers.
After two years beginning at Bay Shore Park in New Franken and ending at Bay Beach Amusement Park, this year’s course began and ended in the heart of downtown Green Bay. The change was made to more firmly plant the event’s roots downtown, and to enhance the participant and spectator experience on a fun and flat urban course.
The Bellin Women’s Half Marathon offers a one-of-a-kind race weekend experience. Registration includes admission to the Friday night Women’s Inspiration Dinner, as well as a unique collectable finisher medallion and a quality long-sleeve finisher shirt and headband. Runners sip non-alcoholic champagne and snack on chocolate and other delicacies as they celebrate their finish.
The celebration continues after this morning’s race, when participants and their families gather for a dance party and awards ceremony on the CityDeck behind Hagemeister Park. The festivities run from 9:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. with the awards ceremony at 11:15 a.m. For the third consecutive year, Fox 11 Good Day Wisconsin co-anchor Rachel Manek is emceeing the event.
The fourth annual Bellin Women’s Half Marathon will be held Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018.
